I have listened to the first season of this amazing series of podcasts: http://www.writingexcuses.com/, by one of my favorite authors, Brandon Sanderson.
These podcasts are a veritable goldmine. I have learned a lot from just that first season, and it mostly shows me that I have a very long way to go. It doesn’t matter. Writing is a process and I can learn as I go.
This evening I went back to the beginning, looking back on the Nexus books as a whole, and started to create a more structured outline, paying attention to area’s that need a lot more attention. I try to find the structures in the story (3-act, a bit of romance) and see if I can straighten out the straying parts.
Already I have a better feel for the global arcs and the relationship between Cyrilla, Wessel and Dariën.
I know I should finish the book first before implementing these new-found ideas, but it is hard to abstain from tinkering. I will, though, because going back now will definitely mean more work. First the entire story needs to be out of my head. Finish this last book, thén return with the chainsaw and whip and get the books into a better shape.
